About Filter Coffee
In Turkish coffee culture, coffee and water are combined to create a thoroughly intertwined mixture, as it is believed that this method extracts more flavor. While this drinking and brewing style has become ingrained in our palates, one of the world's most important coffee brewing methods is known as filtered coffee. However, this method works in the opposite way: after combining water with coffee and brewing, the filtered liquid is consumed, separating it from the grounds.
What is Filter Coffee?
It is ready-to-drink brewed coffee obtained by grinding coffee beans and passing hot water through a paper or filter apparatus.
The term "filtered coffee" actually refers to a brewing method, not a type of coffee. As the name suggests, the coffee is filtered in water. While its aroma, color, oil, acidity, caffeine, and taste remain in the drinkable portion, the grounds that give all its essence become unnecessary. This method first emerged in the mid-19th century with the use of the French press. Although the equipment developed in France at that time for filtering coffee was somewhat different from today's, the French press as we know it was developed in the last century.
Also in the last century, Melitta Benz in Germany developed the coffee filter to prevent grounds from mixing into the drinkable portion of coffee. Benz, who patented the filter she developed using a method she experimented with at home at the age of 35, thus became an entrepreneur and, with the company she founded, succeeded in introducing filtered and brewed coffee culture to the world. While this culture has reached us today, there are many types of coffee brewed using filtering methods, such as the French press or coffee machines.
Considering the known varieties today, different types emerge sometimes according to the coffee's origin, sometimes its aromatic structure, and sometimes its drinking style. For example, the best filter coffee types listed below constitute the most widely known varieties today.
- Regional coffees
- Flavored coffees
- Smooth filter coffee
- Strong coffee
- Blended coffees
- Coffee with milk
In these varieties, the structure of the coffee, for example, in regional coffees, is determined by beans from Brazil and Costa Rica. On the other hand, when aroma is mentioned, it generally refers to filter coffee varieties produced with the inherent aroma of the coffee bean or with specially added aromas. Furthermore, to meet consumer demands and for diversification, options such as cold filter coffee are offered in some countries and locations today. In all varieties, coffee beans are generally known as Arabica and Robusta, while cultivation is carried out in many countries such as Colombia, Ethiopia, Brazil, Kenya, or Guatemala.
What are the Benefits of Filter Coffee?
Thanks to this method, which is among the most consumed coffee brewing methods in the world, significant benefits are gained, particularly by introducing beneficial minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants into the body.
The benefits that can be obtained through regular consumption, especially thanks to recent research, can be stated as follows:
- Even consuming 1 cup daily can reduce the likelihood of depression.
- This coffee method, made by grinding pure coffee beans, provides high antioxidant intake, leading to vitality and rejuvenation in the body.
- Because it has a low calorie content without fat, the body can burn more fat and aid in weight loss with this coffee consumption.
- In daily life, it provides high energy to the body, supporting mental clarity, ease of waking up, and better focus.
- It offers the advantage of protecting the body against cancer factors and supporting the body in heart diseases.
- For type 2 diabetes patients, filtered and brewed coffee has a positive balancing effect on blood sugar levels.
- Daily consumption provides the body with the Magnesium, Potassium, B2, B3, and B5 vitamins it may need.
How to Make Filter Coffee?
It is possible to prepare this type of coffee using methods such as machines, drippers, or French presses, which have been developed to obtain clear coffee through the filtering method.
Today, even household machines, thanks to paper or synthetic filters, allow hot water to slowly brew the coffee and produce a clear cup. However, for making filter coffee, particularly good filter usage must be ensured. This point should be considered for both French presses and coffee machines, and coffee beans should be ground to the ideal level according to their characteristics or structure.
If a pouring or dripper method is used, to prevent the paper from mixing with the coffee, the filter paper can be placed in the equipment and then moistened with warm water to make it adhere. This way, the filter paper easily strains the coffee without imparting its taste to the coffee, and with proper heating of the equipment, the best filter coffee is obtained.
One of the most important points to pay attention to when preparing coffee is the correct water temperature. Firstly, boiling water should not be used. If coffee is to be made with a French press, water can be boiled and then added after waiting for approximately 1 minute, or in a machine, brewing occurs automatically once the water reaches the appropriate level. This is because boiling water causes the coffee beans to burn, and in brewing, the machine completes the process in an automatic time, while in a French press, brewing should be completed in approximately 5 minutes.
How to Brew Filter Coffee?
Today, coffee machines are the most widely used method, and practical machines can even be found in homes. With a few practical steps in the machine, it is possible to brew coffee easily.
To achieve good coffee consumption, of course, the best filter coffee beans must first be obtained. At this point, suitable beans for filtering are produced all over the world. A special almond-flavored blend, an apricot-tasting Peruvian coffee, or a Colombian coffee offering both chocolate and green apple aromas can be preferred. Today, Central American, African, or Asian coffees produced in many regions of the world offer varying opportunities for filter coffee aromas, increasing the range of choices.
The chosen coffee type should be ground appropriately according to the characteristics of your filter, the aroma you want to obtain from the coffee, the caffeine content, and how intense a taste you desire. Subsequently, for good brewing, attention should be paid to the filter coffee water ratio. For example, usually when 7 grams of ground coffee is combined with 125 ml of water, an ideal drink is produced. This measurement corresponds to 1 cup of coffee, and the measurements indicated on the coffee filter and water reservoir of machines used in homes today can also be followed.
When brewing for individual consumption at home, for instance, the French press can be rinsed with boiled water, and then 7 grams of ground coffee, or 8 grams for a stronger brew, can be added to the bottom of the French press. Then, a small amount of water can be added to wet the coffee, waited for half a minute, and then 125 ml of boiled and at least half a minute rested hot water can be added. This way, after 5 minutes of brewing, the coffee is ready and can be enjoyed by pouring it into a cup.
How to Identify Quality Filter Coffee?
When choosing quality filter coffee, there are some key points you should look for. Foremost among these is freshness. The critical detail that determines the aroma and sweetness of coffee is the roast date. This is where the fundamental characteristic of specialty coffee lies, which is not found in industrial coffee. Specialty coffee is prepared and packaged specifically for order. It should not be kept for too long. Industrial coffees, on the other hand, sit packaged for months.
If you are looking for quality coffee, the expiration date alone is a very insufficient indicator. In fact, the roast date is much more important than the expiration date. Furthermore, quality filter coffee has valved packaging. These packages have benefits far beyond simply protecting from light and oxygen. The carbon dioxide produced because the coffee is freshly roasted is expelled through these valves, while oxygen does not enter the package. This prevents the coffee's taste from deteriorating. As freshness increases, you can get distinct tasting notes and a vibrant texture for a "cleaner" drink.
The second important criterion in selecting a quality filter is transparent information. The factors that determine the quality of a coffee are its origin (the country and region where it is grown), processing method, and tasting notes. The transparent sharing of these criteria is an indicator of quality. At the same time, it is important that the coffee scores 80 points in all these aspects.
Another issue is the roast profile for filter coffee brewing. In excessively dark, heavy roasts, bitter and burnt flavors come to the fore. However, quality coffee requires a balanced aroma. Acidity and sweetness are also important. Light and medium roasts provide these more clearly. Therefore, choosing "balanced" flavors instead of heavy/dark roasts will make it easier to find quality coffee.
Grinding also directly affects quality. For a quality filter coffee experience, you should lean towards aromatic and stable options. For this, you can either choose whole bean coffee and grind it yourself, or buy specialty coffee. If you are interested in coffee at an entry-level, we definitely recommend discussing the grinding with the seller.
Finally, the sign you're looking for in the cup: it's not bitter, but balanced; not sharp, but has a clean finish. Evaluating these criteria together when buying quality filter coffee will make it easier for you to find the aroma that best suits your expectations.
Filter Coffee Prices
When you want to consume this coffee as a home or business consumer, you first need to pay attention to some details in the coffee you buy. For example, the beans must be fresh, and quality beans should be selected. Depending on your coffee drinking habits and how strong or aromatic you prefer your coffee, you can choose between lightly roasted, medium roasted, or dark roasted beans.
After determining the right type of coffee, all regional, aromatic, and various quantities of coffees offered in our category for the buy filter coffee option can be chosen. Once good coffee is procured, it can be ground to the desired degree suitable for your filters. For your coffee brewed with a machine or French press method, to ensure regular consumption in daily life, coffees of the same quality and aroma can be re-procured at certain intervals.
In this method, when brewing coffee, it is important to always obtain your accustomed taste, meaning aroma, in a fresh state. Because if you continue to use the coffee you procured for years or at least months, after a certain period, you may notice that the coffee no longer tastes the same. For this reason, you can procure fresh and new filter coffee every time, for example, once a month or at least once every 2 months, and consume it after re-grinding. It is exactly at this point that you can always procure the products in our category fresh, with varying aromas, and at an appropriate price according to their type.
