About Espresso Coffee
While the way or location of coffee production determines its name, sometimes the preparation or brewing method gives coffee a name. For example, when finely ground coffee from different regions is used to make Turkish coffee, this name actually comes from a brewing method. A similar situation has led to the concept of espresso coffee, another world-renowned Italian-style coffee.
What is Espresso Coffee?
When coffee, after originating in the heart of Africa, spread throughout the world and became widespread in Europe, espresso coffee emerged as a brewing style. In this method, coffee is finely ground and then hot water is passed through it under high pressure to obtain a concentrated beverage.
Espresso can be described not as a type of coffee but as a type of beverage to be prepared and consumed. The main reason for characterizing it with a separate name is that it is prepared with a special brewing method, in the Italian style. In fact, this method has a similar structure to Turkish coffee; the coffee is finely ground, but instead of brewing it in a cezve (Turkish coffee pot), hot water is passed through the coffee to achieve brewing.
The espresso coffee bean used for espresso coffee can differ from a regular coffee bean. At this point, it can be stated that all coffees in the world are generally produced with Robusta and Arabica beans, no matter which country they are grown in. Today, when consuming Turkish coffee or Colombian coffee, we are talking about coffee originating from the same beans. However, whole bean espresso is specially selected from coffees from different countries around the world and requires a special roasting and brewing process different from regular coffee.
How to Make Espresso Coffee
While it is possible to make espresso coffee using different methods, an espresso machine is used to brew a truly delicious and intensely flavored coffee. Inside the machine, ingredients are combined with specific measurements to quickly obtain a highly aromatic coffee.
For a good espresso, the machine must first be prepared, and then the ingredients determined. To achieve a correct result, ideally 10 g of finely ground espresso coffee and 30 ml of drinking water are prepared. The machine operates at 9 bar pressure, the water temperature varies between 85-95 degrees, and it provides an average of 20 kg of compression pressure. The water flow rate is set by the machine at 24-27 grams per second, and a very good espresso is obtained when a skilled barista expertly performs this adjustment.
To explain practically, after suitable beans are finely ground, 10 g of the resulting espresso powder coffee is placed in the filter of an espresso machine. After the filter is seated in the machine, the machine brews for 25 seconds, and a delicious espresso ready to drink emerges.
Types of Espresso Coffee
Espresso coffee, which can be enjoyed simply by grinding coffee and combining it with water for brewing, can take on different forms through the use of various ingredients. Because while espresso is an Italian brewing method, different global societies have developed this method to suit their preferences, or various regions within Italy have created new varieties through developments. The following details can be mentioned for the known types of espresso today.
- First, considering Americano, a thinner and easier-to-drink espresso is obtained by mixing 2/3 hot water with espresso in a coffee cup.
- Latte is a very popular type of espresso, where steamed milk is added to 1 shot of espresso. This way, latte is served in a glass cup with an average of 1 cm thick foam on top of the coffee. In some cases, a method called ice latte, made with a mixture of cold milk and ice, is also used.
- Flat white is an Australian variation of espresso, again with steamed milk added. However, there is no foam on top.
- Macchiato, another Italian coffee culture, emerged as a changing culture by softening espresso with milk and foam, and then adding aromatic syrups.
- Cappuccino is undoubtedly among the most popular espresso types, creating a lot of milk foam and a latte-like flavor, while grated chocolate makes for a very enjoyable consumption.
- Mocha is obtained by mixing 1 shot of espresso with some chocolate powder and milk, providing a hot chocolate-like flavor. Typically, sometimes 2, sometimes 3 cm of foam is added afterwards, and chocolate powder is sprinkled on top. If white chocolate is used, then the white chocolate mocha variety emerges.
